ABOUT THIS BOOK
Wood delves into the strange history and rich context of a long-neglected work of the great American artist Winslow Homer. Though Homer completed the picture in 1866, it was lost from public view for a century, and its true title, Near Andersonville, was not discovered until 1987. In focusing on this painting, Wood also revisits the history of the notorious wartime prison that became an enduring cultural icon, takes a closer look at the artist’s war experiences, and discusses other key images of African Americans that Homer generated during the war years.
