Foundations of Applied Electromagnetics
Kamal Sarabandi
Michigan Publishing Services, 2022
Electromagnetics is credited with the greatest achievements of physics in the 19th century. Despite its long history of development, due to its fundamental nature and broad base, research in applied electromagnetics is still vital and going strong. In recent years electromagnetics played a major role in a wide range of disciplines, including wireless communication, remote sensing of the environment, military defense, and medical applications, among many others. Graduate students interested in such exciting fields of research need a strong foundation in field theory, which was part of the motivation for writing this book on classical electromagnetics but with an eye on its modern applications.

An Introduction to Chaghatay
A Graded Textbook for Reading Central Asian Sources
Eric Schluessel
Michigan Publishing Services, 2018
The Chaghatay language was used across Central Asia from the 1400s through the 1950s. Chroniclers, clerks, and poets in modern-day Afghanistan, Xinjiang, Uzbekistan, and beyond wrote countless volumes of text in Chaghatay, from the famed Baburnama to the documents of everyday life. However, even more and more material in Chaghatay is becoming available to scholars, few are able to read the language with ease.

An Introduction to Chaghatay is the first textbook in over a century to introduce this language to English-speaking students. This book is designed to build a foundation in reading Chaghatay without assuming any background knowledge on the part of the reader. These graded, cumulative lessons include common vocabulary, accessible grammar explanations, and examples of Chaghatay manuscripts. Authentic texts introduce the student to different genres, including hagiographies, documents, “stories of the prophets,” and newspapers while introducing critical skills in paleography.

Eric Schluessel is Assistant Professor of Chinese History and Politics at the University of Montana. He holds a PhD in History and East Asian Languages from Harvard University, an MA in Linguistics from the School of Oriental and African Studies, and an MA in Central Eurasian Studies from Indiana University. He is the author of several articles on the history of Chinese Central Asia and is currently preparing a critical edition and translation of Mullah Musa Sayrami’s Tarikh-i Hamidi, a chronicle of Xinjiang in the nineteenth century.

Perspectives on the U-M Council for Disability Concerns
Anna Ercoli Schnitzer
Michigan Publishing Services, 2018
The U-M Council for Disability Concerns, established by then-UM President Harold Shapiro in 1983, has never had an official institutional history.  In this Maize Book, the authors present perspectives on the Council from its inception to date. Rather than merely listing dates and facts, the work focuses on selected representative dynamic individuals who provide vibrant descriptions of different aspects of the Council. The intent of including these personal narratives is to portray the inspirational culture and atmosphere that have imbued and grown the Council throughout its existence.

The Council has changed and enlarged its membership from its origins as a small, low-key group consisting primarily of faculty and staff engaged in the disability arena, to an organization that encompasses a diverse, cross-campus and local community membership, with an extensive mailing list, as well. The achievements of the Council over the years and the goals that it envisions for the future, we hope, will serve as a template for other institutions.

A Kids Guide to Organ Transplant
Tanya Smith
Michigan Publishing Services, 2018
This picture book was created for young children who are in need of a solid organ transplant.  It was developed by two dedicated Social Workers at the University of Michigan Transplant Center to give these children and their families something to put them more at ease with the organ transplant process and to help them understand that they are not alone.

The bright and colorful illustrations appeal to a child’s eye.  Simple text accompanies each illustration.  A direct question (e.g. “Will I have stitches or a scar?”) on one page is answered on the facing page, beneath an original illustration (e.g. “Your doctor will use stitches or a special kind of glue to help your body heal from the surgery. After the stitches come out, you will have a scar. This will always remind you of how brave you were!”).

This book is the perfect accompaniment for young children who may need a transplant, as well as for siblings and other family members who have questions and would appreciate some assistance on how to talk about the transplant process.

Impasses of the Post-Global
Theory in the Era of Climate Change
Henry Sussman
Michigan Publishing Services, 2012
The diverse materials comprising Impasses of the Post-Global take as their starting point an interrelated, if seemingly endless sequence of current ecological, demographic, socio-political, economic, and informational disasters. These have impacted on the stakes and tenor of cultural criticism as much as they have on tangible relations in the contemporary world. The contributors to the Impasses struggle as valiantly with a rapidly unfolding set of new discursive and communicative preconditions as they do with the open-ended chain of current insults and injuries to the ecological, socio-political, and cultural surrounds. These in turn demand increased attentiveness on the part of culturally and politically engaged readers. If the volume claims a global, if not post-global scope in the range of its perspectives and interventions, the diversity of approaches and interests advanced and updated by its contributors is correspondingly vast. These include the contemporary discourses of deconstruction, climate change, ecological imbalance and despoilment, sustainability, security, economic bailout, auto-immunity, and globalization itself. With contributions by James H. Bunn, Rey Chow, Bruce Clarke, Tom Cohen, Randy Martin, Yates McKee, Alberto Moreiras, Haun Saussy, Tian Song, Henry Sussman, Samuel Weber, Ewa P. Ziarek, and Kryzsztof Ziarek.
