Capital at the Brink
Overcoming the Destructive Legacies of Neoliberalism
Jeffrey R. Di Leo and Uppinder Mehan, editors
Michigan Publishing Services, 2014
Capital at the Brink reveals the pervasiveness, destructiveness, and dominance of neoliberalism within American society and culture. The contributors to this collection also offer points of resistance to an ideology wherein, to borrow Henry Giroux’s comment, “everything either is for sale or is plundered for profit.” The first step in fighting neoliberalism is to make it visible. By discussing various inroads that it has made into political, popular, and literary culture, Capital at the Brink is taking this first step and joining a global resistance that works against neoliberalism by revealing the variety of ways in which it dominates and destroys various dimensions of our social and cultural life.

Circuit Analysis and Design

Michigan Publishing Services, 2018
[from the Preface] Circuit Analysis and Design aims to accomplish the four vital objectives of a foundational course in the majority of electrical and computer engineering curricula:
(1) It should introduce the fundamental principles of circuit analysis and equip the student with the skills necessary to analyze any planar, linear circuit, including those driven by dc or ac sources, or by more complicated waveforms such as pulses and exponentials.
(2) It should start the student on the journey of circuit design.
(3) It should guide the student into the seemingly magical world of domain transformations—such as the Laplace and Fourier transforms, not only as circuit analysis tools, but also as mathematical languages that are “spoken” by many fields of science and engineering.
(4) It should expand the student’s technical horizon by introducing him/her to some of the many allied fields of science and technology.

Teaching and Learning Popular Music in Academia
Edited by Carlos Rodriguez
Michigan Publishing Services, 2017
As the twenty-first century’s third decade approaches, popular music study has achieved greater scope, depth, and prominence in academic departments of music conservatories than ever before. Musicology, music theory, and music education scholars have recognized the significant role and influence of popular music in contemporary society, and also in their own lives, utilizing their personal insights to broaden disciplinary boundaries while more directly addressing the needs for musical understanding in the communities they serve.

This book is a collection of essays originally presented at Ann Arbor Symposium IV, Teaching and Learning Popular Music, at the University of Michigan. Organized into four sections of similar-themed writings, the essays trace numerous discourses, principles, methods, and prospects for popular music education in academia. Additionally, the book contains several features that are useful for modern-day scholars and their institutions. First, it acknowledges the gradual liquidation of traditional disciplinary boundaries, signaling the likely future dominance of interdisciplinary research and collaborations. Second, it values international perspectives of music teaching and learning. Third, the selected topics, methodologies, and predictions provide a working agenda for the future development and success of popular music teaching and learning.

A Festschrift in Honor of Sarah G. Thomason
Edited by Anna M. Babel and Mark A. Sicoli
Michigan Publishing Services, 2021
Contact, Structure, and Change addresses the classic problem of how and why languages change over time through the lens of two uniquely productive and challenging perspectives: the study of language contact and the study of Indigenous American languages. Each chapter in the volume draws from a distinct theoretical positioning, ranging from documentation and description, to theoretical syntax, to creole languages and sociolinguistics. This volume acts as a Festschrift honoring Sarah G. Thomason, a long-time professor at the University of Michigan, whose career spans the disciplines of historical linguistics, contact linguistics, and Native American studies. This conversation among distinguished scholars who have been influenced by Thomason extends and in some cases refracts the questions her work addresses through a collection of studies that speak to the enduring puzzles of language change.

Sand Tray Therapy Reflections from Teenagers and Young Adults Facing Cancer and Blood Disorders
Jennifer Gretzema
Michigan Publishing Services, 2017
It is often difficult for young people facing an illness to verbalize their personal thoughts and feelings.  In the Child and Family Life department, at The University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, sand tray therapy is used to help this vulnerable population communicate with their healthcare team, families, and loved ones. Sand tray therapy is a window into the thoughts, feelings, and coping styles of youth struggling with life-altering illnesses and hospitalizations. It helps them process their past and present medical experiences, set goals, and teach others about their needs.

The sand trays and stories in this book were created by patients and families living with Cancer and Blood Disorders. Their expressions, created in the sand and conveyed through the written word, provide insight into their world. Sand tray therapy provides a sacred space to process experiences using symbols instead of language.

This collection of photos and personal stories was compiled so that other patients, their families, and their friends can share the authors’ journeys.

Creating Data Literate Students
Kristin Fontichiaro, Jo Angela Oehrli, Amy Lennex, editors
Michigan Publishing Services, 2017
Creating Data Literate Students provides high school librarians and educators
with foundational domain knowledge to teach a new subset of information
literacy skills — data and statistical literacy, including: statistics and data comprehension; data as argument; and data visualization.

Data — both raw and displayed in visualizations — can clarify or confuse,
confirm or deny, persuade or deter. Students often learn that numbers are
objective, though data in the real world is rarely so. In fact, visualized data —
even from authoritative sources — can sometimes be anything but objective.

Librarians and classroom educators need to be as fluent with quantitative
data as they are with text in order to support high schoolers as they engage
with data in formal and informal settings. We asked contributors to this
volume — experts in high school curriculum, information literacy and/or
data literacy — to explore the intersections between data and curriculum
and identify high-impact strategies for demystifying data for educators and
students alike.

The Cultural Politics of the New American Studies
John Carlos Rowe
Michigan Publishing Services, 2012
In The Cultural Politics of the New American Studies, leading American Studies scholar John Carlos Rowe responds to two urgent questions for intellectuals. First, how did neoliberal ideology use the issues of feminism, gay rights, multiculturalism, transnationalism and globalization, class mobility, religious freedom, and freedom of speech and cultural expression to justify a new “American Exceptionalism,” designed to support U.S. economic, political, military, and cultural expansion around the world in the past two decades?
Second, if neoliberalism has successfully employed various cultural media, then what are the best means of criticizing its main claims and fundamental purposes? Is it possible under these circumstances to imagine a “counter-culture” which might effectively challenge neoliberalism or is such an alternative already controlled and contained by such labels as “political correctness,” “the far left,” “radicalism,” “extremism,” even “terrorism,” which in the popular imagination refer to political and social minorities, doomed thereby to marginalization?
Rowe argues that the tradition of “cultural criticism” advocated by influential public intellectuals like Edward Said can be adapted to the new circumstances demanded by the hegemony of neoliberalism and its successful command of new media. Yet rather than simply honoring important predecessors such as Said, we need to reconceive the role of the public intellectual as more than just an “interdisciplinary scholar” but also as a social critic able to negotiate the different media.
