The Institution of Engineering and Technology, 2021
Photovoltaic electricity generation is a rapidly growing industry, and a key pillar of a decarbonised energy system. In modern solar cells, laser technology is used to form localised structures such as a selective emitter through doping or to locally ablate dielectric layers for contact definition. A critical factor is the ability to passivate the laser-induced defects to prevent premature charge carrier recombination reducing the cell efficiency. Hydrogenation is such a passivation technique. The exact mechanisms have until recently been poorly understood, so this timely reference covers the recent breakthroughs in the understanding of hydrogen passivation.

Modeling and Simulation of HVDC Transmission
Minxiao Han
The Institution of Engineering and Technology, 2021
The development of large-scale renewable generation and load electrification call for highly efficient and flexible electric power integration, transmission and interconnection. High Voltage DC (HVDC) transmission technology has been recognized as the key technology for this scenario. HVDC transmissions, including both the line commutated converter (LCC) HVDC and voltage source converter (VSC) HVDC have played an important role in the modern electric power system. However, with the inclusion of power electronic devices, HVDC introduces the characteristics of nonlinearity and different timescales into the traditional electromechanical system and thus careful modeling and simulation of HVDC transmission are essential for power system design, commissioning, operation and maintenance.

Ridge Waveguides and Passive Microwave Components
J. Helszajn
The Institution of Engineering and Technology, 2000
The ridge waveguide, which is a rectangular waveguide with one or more metal inserts (ridges), is an important transmission line in microwave engineering, through which many passive components can be achieved. As such it is a well-established and widely used element in commercial electronics and communications devices. This book collects together much of the work of Professor Helszajn, an international authoriy in the field, and will enable the reader to have direct access to this material without need for exhaustive search of research papers. Generously illustrated, it is likely to become the definitive reference source on this topic. The book includes closed-form and finite element calculations of the propagation constant, attenuation and mode spectrum for the ridge waveguide, as well as power-current and power-voltage definitions of impedance. Circular polarisation is also treated. Propagation properties where the waveguide has a dielectric filler are calculated. The treatment is then extended to more complex designs, including quadruple ridge waveguides with and without a gyromagnetic filler. The text includes descriptions of many of the passive devices which can be realised using these waveguides, including isolators, phase shifters and circulators. A treatment of the finline waveguide is included as its geometry is closely related to that of the ridge waveguide, leading to components such as the 3-port finline calculator.

Semi-custom IC Design and VLSI
P.J. Hicks
The Institution of Engineering and Technology, 1983
The contents of this book were first presented as a series of lectures at the first IEE Vacation School on Semi-Custom IC Design and VLSI held at the University of Edinburgh on 4-8 July 1983. The earlier chapters provide an introduction to silicon IC technology and include descriptions of the various processing techniques employed in the manufacture of microelectronic components. Different types of semi-custom IC are then reviewed and the factors that have to be considered in choosing a semi-custom technique are examined in detail. Logic design is next presented as an activity that is best carried out at a higher level of abstraction than the customary/logic gate level by using the algorithmic state machine (ASM) method. In the sections that follow, computer aids to design and design automation tools are introduced as essential requirements for the rapid and error-free design of semicustom ICs. Testing strategies and the need to design for testability are also covered in some detail.

In this book, the theory needed to understand wideband amplifier design using the simplest models possible will be developed. This theory will be used to develop algebraic equations that describe particular circuits used in high frequency design so that the reader develops a 'gut level' understanding of the process and circuit. SPICE and Genesys simulations will be performed to show the accuracy of the algebraic models. By looking at differences between the algebraic equations and the simulations, new algebraic models will be developed that include parameters originally left out of the model. By including these new elements, the algebraic equations provide surprising accuracy while maintaining simplicity and understanding of the circuit.

The Institution of Engineering and Technology, 2004
Up until a few years ago there were many different modelling languages available to software developers. However, this vast array of choice only served to hinder communication and as a result the Unified Modelling Language (UML) was born. Although the UML has its roots firmly in the software world, the benefits of adopting a standard visual notation have been recognised in many other fields, not least of which is the field of systems engineering. This book concentrates on systems-based applications, rather than the traditional software applications that are more usually associated with the UML. Now fully updated to reflect the changes to UML for its version 2.0 release, this new edition has been substantially re-written and includes new material on systems architectures and life cycle management.

This book provides a hands-on introduction to model-based requirements engineering and management by describing a set of views that form the basis for the approach. These views take into account each individual requirement in terms of its description, but then also provide each requirement with meaning by putting it into the correct 'context'. A requirement that has been put into a context is known as a 'use case' and may be based upon either stakeholders or levels of hierarchy in a system. Each use case must then be analysed and validated by defining a combination of scenarios and formal mathematical and logic-based proofs that provide the rigour required for safety-critical and mission-critical systems.
