This pamphlet series has been hailed by critics, teachers, and librarians as an ideals means of introducing both students and general readers to American writers of all periods. Choice has commented: "For the small library this series offers at small cost introductions by reputable critics o dozens of significant authors, and the larger the library the greater the number of undergraduate students looking for a place to start on some writer." The New York Times Book Review has called the pamphlets "extraordinarily good," pointing out that "they are just long enough (48 pages) to permit a real survey of an author's work and short enough to attract the casual reader, the anxiety-ridden student, and the professor desperate for the straight word on an unfamiliar writer."

The Ethnobotanical Laboratory at the University of Michigan
Melvin R. Gilmore
University of Michigan Press, 1932
In 1932, with this slim but important volume, the University of Michigan Museum of Anthropology began its publication series. Melvin R. Gilmore, a preeminent ethnobotanist, joined the Museum as its first curator of ethnology in 1929 and in 1930 established the Ethnobotanical Laboratory: the largest such collection in North America. He became director of the laboratory in 1938. In this volume, he discusses the establishment of the laboratory and the importance of ethnobotanical research. Nearly a century later, the Ethnobotanical Laboratory is still unique for its extensive collection of archaeological and systematic comparative wood, seeds, and plant parts from around the world, and for its ethnographic examples of how traditional cultures collect, store, process, and use these plants.

The report is based on the replies of 4,637 students, 408 alumni, and 156 campus organizations.Of exceptional interest are studies of special groups such as 379 “prominent” students, 112 honor students, 904 officers of campus organizations; of the relation between the intensity of extra-curricular activity and scholastic achievement; of the time actually spent in extra-curricular activity; of the “death rate” of campus organizations; and of the extent to which alumni carry over in community life the activities of their college years.
