Early Art and Artists in West Virginia

An Introduction and Biographical Directory

JOHN A. CUTHBERT

West Virginia University Press, 2000

Early Art and Artists in West Virginia is copiously illustrated with 136 plates accompanying the essays on portraiture and landscape painting, which form the first half of the book. A similar number of smaller illustrations in full color bring life to a biographical directory in the second part of the book, which contains nearly one thousand known painters who worked in West Virginia. Many West Virginians will find their family names in this directory, and some will doubtless locate the information here that they have long sought in order to learn more about a painting in their family's possession. The book is supported by an extensive bibliography on the state's artistic heritage and a full index to both the directory and the essays.

Encyclopedia of British Women Writers

Schlueter, Paul

Rutgers University Press, 1999

This far-reaching examination of women writers identified with Great Britain builds on its predecessor's strengths, with 50 percent new material and completely updated entries. Over six hundred writers are discussed in terms of their biographies--with precise details where these could be ascertained and in come cases correcting biographies in other reference works--as well as in terms of thematic issues and critical reception. Each entry includes a definitive bibliography of the writer and a thorough secondary bibliography (including book-length studies, reference works, major essays, and reviews) to lead readers to other sources. Available in paperback for the first time, this book is an ideal desk reference for scholar and student alike.

Paul Schlueter and June Schlueter have individually and jointly written and edited a number of critical and reference works, including The English Novel: Twentieth Century Criticism (Vol. 2: Twentieth Century Novelists) and Modern American Literature (Supplement 2). Paul Schlueter's books include The Novels of Doris Lessing and Shirley Ann Grau. June Schlueter, Provost, and Dana Professor of English at Lafayette College, has edited Feminist Readings of Modern American Drama and Modern American Drama: The Female Canon.

English-Basque Dictionary

Gorka Aulestia

University of Nevada Press, 1990

With over 25,000 English entries and their Basque equivalents in six major dialects, this volume is the most complete reference to the Basque language to date for English-speaking people. This useful resource is the very first of its kind to become available to both the casual student and the serious scholar of the Basque language. The Biscayan, Guipuzcoan, Labourdin, Low Navarrese, Zuberoan, and Batua dialects are included in order to cover all the different regional and formal dialects used in the body of Basque literature, both written and oral, and to present the language in a form familiar to American Basques who may know little of Batua. Whenever possible, the authors also include words relating to modern society.
