Fat Activism (Second Edition)

A Radical Social Movement

Charlotte Cooper

Intellect Books, 2021

What is fat activism and why is it important? To answer this question, Charlotte Cooper presents an expansive grassroots study that traces the forty-year history of international fat activism and grounds its actions in their proper historical and geographical contexts. She details fat activist methods, analyzes existing literature in the field, challenges long-held assumptions that uphold systemic fatphobia, and makes clear how crucial feminism and queer theory are to the lifeblood of the movement. She also considers fat activism’s proxy concerns, including body image, body positivity, the obesity epidemic, and fat stigma.

Combining rigorous scholarship with personal, accessible writing, Fat Activism: A Radical Social Movement is not only an invaluable contribution to the burgeoning field of fat studies, but also a vehicle for much-needed social change.

Feminism against Cisness

Emma Heaney, editor

Duke University Press, 2024

The contributors to Feminism against Cisness showcase the future of feminist historical, theoretical, and political thought freed from the conceptual strictures of cisness: the fallacy that assigned sex determines sexed experience. The essays demonstrate that this fallacy hinges on the enforcement of white and bourgeois standards of gender comportment that naturalize brutalizing race and class hierarchies. It is, therefore, no accident that the social processes making cisness compulsory are also implicated in anti-Blackness, misogyny, Indigenous erasure, xenophobia, and bourgeois antipathy for working-class life. Working from trans historical archives and materialist trans feminist theories, this volume demonstrates the violent work that cis ideology has done and thinks toward a future for feminism beyond this ideology's counterrevolutionary pull.

Feminist Making, Doing, and Sensing

Experiments in Philosophy

Lauren Guilmette and Ada S. Jaarsma, editors

Duke University Press, 2026

Placing pressure on what it means to “do” feminist philosophy, Feminist Making, Doing, and Sensing offers an innovative and critical rethinking of feminist philosophical practice and feminist philosophy as a disciplinary field of thought. The collection raises questions about how disciplines are made, how philosophy gets done, and the collaborative nature of thinking. Seeking to decenter disciplinary norms about content, authority, and belonging, this collection disrupts the status quo of feminist philosophy through its insistence on formal experimentation and creative methods as well as its refusal to take philosophy and its disciplinary attachments at face value. The essays argue for ways of thinking, making, and doing philosophy that are participatory, relational, somatic, affective, sonorous, and sensorial, often looking to experimental and art-based practices such as film, music, poetry, comedy, crocheting, and more. Meant to encourage a collaborative dialogue with readers, several essays conclude with prompts, exercises, and activities, inviting readers to participate in creative philosophical making alongside their own practices.
