In this collection of essays, an acclaimed poet and playwright searches for meaning amid catastrophe.
The twenty candid essays in Ash: Catastrophe, Performance, & the Craft are the culmination of a ten-year project by acclaimed poet and playwright Dan O’Brien. Divided into three parts, this volume—portions of which originally appeared in The New York Times, Esquire, and The Times Literary Supplement—combines the deeply personal with the artistic and professional, coalescing around the experience of trauma (physical, mental, moral) and the challenges presented by catastrophe and its aftermath.
In the title essay, O'Brien links the smoke and debris of the Los Angeles wildfires to the toxic legacy of September 11, tracing the lasting repercussions of collective disaster. In “Dear Brother,” he revisits a sibling’s suicide attempt and the family silences that shaped both his life and his writing. Elsewhere, in reflections on documentary theater, political violence, and a long collaboration with Pulitzer Prize–winning war reporter Paul Watson, he weighs the responsibility and the cost of bearing witness to suffering.
Running through the book, and indeed through O’Brien’s career as poet, playwright, essayist, and memoirist, is a search for meaning in the midst of calamity, whether it results from terrorism, from conflagration, from cancer, or from victimhood and abuse. Written over a decade marked by devastating illness, profound cultural upheaval, and hard-won hope, Ash is both an intimate record of survival and a searching meditation on the resilience and reinvention to be found in the creative act.

British playwright Howard Barker coined the term “theatre of catastrophe” to describe his unique brand of complex, ambiguous, and often unsettling drama. Revered in continental Europe, North America, and Australia as one of the greatest living dramatists working in the English language, Barker is also a celebrated poet, theater theorist, and painter. The first collection of interviews conducted with Barker, Howard Barker Interviews 1980–2010 covers his entire career and gives a strong sense of the life and work of this innovative dramatist.

Harold G Koenig
Templeton Press, 2006
In a timely book with a powerful and persuasive message, Dr. Harold G. Koenig addresses federal, state, and local government policy leaders, urging them to more fully integrate religious organizations into the formal disaster response system, and he then provides recommendations on how this can effectively be done. Koenig also advocates faith communities and organizations to learn more about the role they can play in responding to disasters and terrorism.

Jac Saorsa
Intellect Books, 2011
An extraordinary collaboration between contemporary art and critical discourse, Narrating the Catastrophe guides readers through unfamiliar textual landscapes where “being” is defined as an act rather than a form. Drawing on Paul Ricoeur’s notion of intersubjective narrative identity as well as the catastrophe theory of Gilles Deleuze, Jac Saorsa establishes an alternative perspective from which to interpret and engage with the world around us. A highly original—and visually appealing—take on a high-profile issue in contemporary critical debate, this book will appeal to all those interested in visual arts and philosophy.
