Earning Opportunities for Older Workers

Edited by Wilma Donahue

University of Michigan Press, 1955

Earning Opportunities for Older Workers considers the present-day barriers to continued employment of middle-aged and older men and women. Management, unions, and government officials discuss solutions to the problems of employment security, workmen's compensation, pension and insurance costs, and effective utilization of older workers. The aging worker is assessed with regard to changing capacities and skills, health, motivation, the need for counseling and retraining, and the feasibility of continued employment and flexible retirement practices. The problem of older women in the labor force is given special attention. The second half of the book is concerned with practical considerations and illustrations of methods for adapting jobs to fit the abilities of aging workers and for creating earning opportunities for older people who want and need employment but are no longer able to find it. Emphasis is placed upon what the individual can do for himself, and what the community, business, and government can do to meet the needs of people for continuing employment.

Hate the Game

Economic Cheat Codes for Life, Love, and Work

Daryl Fairweather

University of Chicago Press, 2025

The secret insights of economics, translated for the rest of us.

Should I buy or rent? Do I ask for a promotion? Should I tell people I’m pregnant? What salary do I deserve? Should I just quit this job? Common anxieties about life are often grounded in economics. In an increasingly win-lose society, these economic decisions—where to work, where to live, even how to live—have a way of feeling fixed and mistakes terminal.

Daryl Fairweather is no stranger to these dynamics. As the first Black woman to receive an economics PhD from the famed University of Chicago, she saw firsthand how concepts of behavioral economics and game theory were deployed in the real world—and in her own life—to great effect. Hate the Game combines Fairweather’s elite knowledge of these principles with her singular voice in describing how they can be harnessed. Her great talent, unique among economists, is her ability to articulate economic trends in a way that is not just informative, but also accounts for life’s other anxieties.

In Hate the Game, Fairweather fixes her expertise and service on navigating the earliest economic inflection points of adult life: whether to go to college and for how long; partnering, having kids, both, or neither; getting, keeping, and changing jobs; and where to live and how to pay for it. She speaks in actionable terms about what the economy means for individual people, especially those who have the sneaking suspicion they’re losing out. Set against her own experiences and enriched with lessons from history, science, and pop culture, Fairweather instructs readers on how to use game theory and behavioral science to map out options and choose directions while offering readers a sense of control and agency in an economy where those things are increasingly rare.

Templeton Plan

21 Steps to Personal Success and Real Happiness

Sir John Templeton

Templeton Press, 2013

Sir John Templeton (1912–2008), the Wall Street legend who has been described as “arguably the greatest global stock picker of the twentieth century,” clearly knew what it took to be successful. The most important thing, he observed, was to have strong convictions that guided your life—this was the common denominator he saw in all successful people and enterprises. Fortunately for us, he was eager to share his own blueprint for personal success and happiness with the rest of the world. In The Templeton Plan, he laid out the twenty-one guiding principles by which he governed both his professional and personal life.

These principles were grounded in virtues that he considered important enough to be considered the “laws of life”—they include honesty, perseverance, thrift, enthusiasm, humility, and altruism. From this moral foundation, Templeton formulated a step-by-step plan to help improve anyone’s personal and professional life. Among the steps he enumerates, readers will find:
·       Four exercises that will help anyone find the positive in every negative
·       How to be the one person in ten that will productively use more time than they waste
·       The secret trait that separates great workers from good workers
·       How to control your thoughts for effective action
·       The practical applications of a sense of humility
·       How successful people approach risks differently from most people
Taken as a whole, the lessons contained within his twenty-one steps will help readers make lasting friendships, reap significant financial rewards, and find personal satisfaction.

Ever a believer in the future’s vast potential, Templeton hoped that sharing his principles would inspire others to seek their own laws of life, formulate their own plans, and find success and happiness on a scale exponentially greater than his own. He freely admitted that he didn’t know everything and that there was yet much to be discovered about prosperity and joy. The Templeton Plan not only offers his recipe for success, but also shows us the way to formulate our own plans.
