Dimensions of Property in Reproductive Economies

Practices, Structures, and Discourses

Edited by Irina Herb, Stefanie Graefe, and Susanne Lettow

Campus Verlag, 2024

A study of property in transitional economies of reproduction.

Besides reshaping human generativity, reproductive technologies such as IVF, egg donation, and surrogacy give rise to whole new value-creation systems and forms of ownership of the human body. The project is designed as a philosophical and sociological dual project with the aim of exploring discursive, institutional, and subjective processes of doing property in transnational economies of reproduction. It focuses, on the one hand, on bioethical problems surrounding ownership of the human body and, on the other hand, on patterns of interpretation and practices employed by various players in the context of the transnational propertization of human ova in Germany and Spain.

Indigenomicon

American Indians, Video Games, and the Structures of Dispossession

Jodi A. Byrd

Duke University Press, 2025

Settler colonial studies and Indigenous studies are often assumed to be the same intellectual project. In Indigenomicon, Jodi A. Byrd examines the differences between the two fields by bringing video game studies and Indigenous studies into conversation with Black studies, queer studies, and Indigenous feminist critique. Byrd theorizes “the image of the law of the Indigenous” as structuring dispossession in games including Assassin’s Creed, Animal Crossing, BioShock Infinite, and Demon Souls. They demonstrate how games and play might reveal histories of slavery, genocide, and theft of Indigenous lands even as their structures obscure Indigenous spatial and embodied practices that prioritize relationships with land, water, plants, and spirits. With ground and relationality defined as key concepts, Byrd centers Indigenous visions of dystopias to reveal how game spaces encode settler structures of governance even as the design of games might yet provide vital modes of resistance to Indigenous erasure.

Light Filaments

Structures, challenges and applications

Jean-Claude Diels

The Institution of Engineering and Technology, 2022

A laser of sufficient intensity traveling through air will - by itself - engineer a narrow channel over which light will propagate for tens or even hundreds of meters. Such filaments of laser light were first created at the end of the twentieth century, and investigators are now beginning to explore new applications for them.

Structures in the Stream

Water, Science, and the Rise of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

By Todd Shallat

University of Texas Press, 1994

As the Mississippi and other midwestern rivers inundated town after town during the summer of 1993, concerned and angry citizens questioned whether the very technologies and structures intended to "tame" the rivers did not, in fact, increase the severity of the floods. Much of the controversy swirled around the apparent culpability of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the builder of many of the flood control systems that failed.

In this book, Todd Shallat examines the turbulent first century of the dam and canal building Corps and follows the agency's rise from European antecedents through the boom years of river development after the American Civil War. Combining extensive research with a lively style, Shallat tells the story of monumental construction and engineering fiascoes, public service and public corruption, and the rise of science and the army expert as agents of the state.

More than an institutional history, Structures in the Stream offers significant insights into American society, which has alternately supported the public works projects that are a legacy of our French heritage and opposed them based on the democratic, individualist tradition inherited from Britain. It will be important reading for a wide audience in environmental, military, and scientific history, policy studies, and American cultural history.
