Brazil Since 1985

Economy, Polity and Society

Edited by Maria D'Alva G. Kinzo and James Dunkerley

University of London Press, 2003

Looking into Brazil's recent experience of democracy is an arduous undertaking, given the complexities of a country of continental size and great regional contrasts, where areas of prosperity and wealth mingle with underdevelopment and poverty. This book looks at some of the important issues involved in building up a democracy and keeping it working. How should we assess Brazil's experience of democracy? To what extent has the emergence of a democratic regime improved Brazilians' social, economic, and political life? Has democracy been consolidated to the point of making a political breakdown unthinkable or improbable? These are questions that any student of Brazil has to address. The answers to them, however, are far from simple.

Polity and Ecology in Formative Period Coastal Oaxaca

Arthur A. Joyce

University Press of Colorado, 2012

Encapsulating two decades of research, Polity and Ecology in Formative Period Coastal Oaxaca is the first major treatment of the lower Río Verde region of Oaxaca, investigating its social, political, and ecological history. Tracing Formative period developments from the earliest known evidence of human presence to the collapse of Río Viejo (the region's first centralized polity), the volume synthesizes the archaeological and paleoecological evidence from the valley.

This period saw the earliest agricultural settlements in the region as well as the origins of sedentism and social complexity, and witnessed major changes in floodplain and coastal environments that expanded the productivity of subsistence resources. The book addresses theoretically significant questions of broad relevance such as the origins and spread of agriculture, the social negotiation of complex political formations, the effects of long-distance trade and interaction, the macroregional effects of landscape change, and prehispanic ideology and political power.

Focusing on questions of interregional interaction, environmental change, and political centralization, Polity and Ecology in Formative Period Coastal Oaxaca provides a comprehensive understanding of the Formative period archaeology of this important and long neglected region of Oaxaca.

Siege of the Spirits

Community and Polity in Bangkok

Michael Herzfeld

University of Chicago Press, 2016

What happens when three hundred alleged squatters go head-to-head with an enormous city government looking to develop the place where they live? As anthropologist Michael Herzfeld shows in this book, the answer can be surprising. He tells the story of Pom Mahakan, a tiny enclave in the heart of old Bangkok whose residents have resisted authorities’ demands to vacate their homes for a quarter of a century. It’s a story of community versus government, of old versus new, and of political will versus the law.

Herzfeld argues that even though the residents of Pom Mahakan have lost every legal battle the city government has dragged them into, they have won every public relations contest, highlighting their struggle as one against bureaucrats who do not respect the age-old values of Thai/Siamese social and cultural order. Such values include compassion for the poor and an understanding of urban space as deeply embedded in social and ritual relations. In a gripping account of their standoff, Herzfeld—who simultaneously argues for the importance of activism in scholarship—traces the agile political tactics and styles of the community’s leadership, using their struggle to illuminate the larger difficulties, tensions, and unresolved debates that continue to roil Thai society to this day.

Singular Europe

Economy and Polity of the European Community after 1992

William James Adams, Editor

University of Michigan Press, 1994

Singular Europe: Economy and Polity of the European Community after 1992 offers a thorough, multidisciplinary analysis of the sweeping changes and enduring challenges that faced the European Community in the wake of its ambitious 1992 integration project. Sponsored by the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations and drawing on the insights of leading economists, political scientists, and policymakers, this volume examines the economic, legal, and political forces that would shape Europe’s future at the end of the twentieth century.Taking its cue from the landmark “Project 1992”—the drive to create a single market for goods, services, capital, and people—the book begins by exploring the transformative view of a Europe no longer defined by its declining “Old Continent” image, but as a dynamic, populous, and increasingly prosperous global actor. Through three thematic parts, contributors address critical questions about the meaning and limits of integration: What steps remain for true political and economic union? How has European integration redefined competition, corporate strategy, social policy, and regulation? What are the external implications, and will the so-called “Fortress Europe” change global economic relations? With essays covering legitimacy and democracy after Maastricht, German reunification, the challenges of monetary union, competition policy, the social welfare state, telecommunications, banking, and international trade, Singular Europe blends scholarly rigor and policy relevance. The volume is a vital resource for anyone seeking to understand the ambitions and anxieties of a pivotal moment in Europe’s integration—and the ongoing debate over the balance between unity and diversity within the continent.

The Sacred Remains

Myth, History, and Polity in Belau

Richard J. Parmentier

University of Chicago Press, 1987

Based on two years of fieldwork in Belau, an Austronesian culture in western Micronesia, The Sacred Remains is an outstanding example of the new approach to ethnographic writing that challenges Western views of the history of non-Western societies.

Richard J. Parmentier employs semiotic methods to analyze both linguistic and nonlinguistic signs representing Belauan history, showing that these signs also organize social and political structures. He identifies four pervasive semiotic patterns that appear rhetorically in myths, chants, and historical narratives and graphically in the arrangement of certain classes of stones, including village boundary markers, burial platforms, exchange valuables, and monoliths found at abandoned sites in the islands.

While not neglecting historical evidence from Western sources, Parmentier contends that the history of Belau cannot be understood without taking into full account indigenous categories of space, time, and transformation and without recognizing the importance of Belauan social actions that construct, interpret, and transmit historical knowledge. Supporting his analysis of Belauan history with concrete ethnographic demonstration, Parmentier presents a work of central importance for Austronesianists, anthropologists, and historians.
