James P. Quiring served thirty-four years as a forest interpreter, park ranger, and visitor center director with the US Forest Service, National Park Service, and Oregon Department of Forestry. His book Mount St. Helens: The Continuing Story has been translated into three languages. He lives in Salem, Oregon, and continues to hike, fish, and retreat as much as possible at his family’s cabin, rebuilt after the 2020 Beachie Creek Fire, on the Little North Santiam River.
