Community and Frontier
A Ukrainian Settlement in the Canadian Parkland
John C. Lehr
University of Manitoba Press, 2011
A social and economic history of one of the oldest Ukrainian settlements in Western Canada. Established in 1896, the Stuartburn colony was one of the earliest Ukrainian settlements in western Canada. Based on an analysis of government records, pioneer memoirs, and the Ukrainian and English language press, Community and Frontier is a detailed examination of the social, economic, and geographical challenges of this unique ethnic community. It reveals a complex web of inter-ethnic and colonial relationships that created a community that was a far cry from the homogeneous ethnic block settlement feared by the opponents of eastern European immigration. Instead, ethnic relationships and attitudes transplanted from Europe affected the development of trade within the colony, while Ukrainian religious factionalism and the predatory colonial attitudes of mainstream Canadian churches fractured the community and for decades contributed to social dysfunction.

Constructing Tomorrow's Federalism
New Perspectives on Canadian Governance
Ian Peach
University of Manitoba Press, 2007
Governance of the federation is more complex today than ever before: perennial issues of federalism remain unresolved, conflicts continue over the legitimacy of federal spending power, and the accommodation of Quebec nationalism and Aboriginal self-government within the federation is a persistent and precarious concern. From discussions on democracy and distinctiveness to explorations of self-governance and power imbalances, Constructing Tomorrow’s Federalism tests assertions from scholars and practitioners on the legitimacy and future of the state of the federation. In this broad collection of essays, fifteen scholars and political leaders identify options for the future governance of Canada and contribute to a renewed civic discourse on what it means to govern ourselves as a liberal democracy and a multinational federation.

The Counselling Speeches of Jim Ka-Nipitehtew
Freda Ahenakew
University of Manitoba Press, 1998
A monolingual Cree speaker from Onion Lake, Saskatchewan, Jim Ka-Nipitehtew was a highly respected orator. His discourses have great force and authority, and no speeches of similar scope or depth have ever been published in their original form. He speaks of his concerns for young people, and of the proper performances of rituals, and gives an account of the signing of Treaty Six. These are superb examples of authentic spoken Cree texts. They are presented in syllabics, with Roman orthography and English translation on facing pages, and a glossary.
